6 Things I have against Abraham’s nephew Lot

6 Things I have against Abraham’s nephew Lot

1. Abram was not supposed to take family with him

Genesis 12:1 KJV Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2. When Abram offered, Lot chose the well watered plain. If you offer me a choice of apples, I will always take the one with the bad spot, or the smaller one with blemishes. If you offer me a choice of two cookies, I will take the one that’s slightly burnt. Abram, to whom Lot owed so much when given a choice took the better choice, the well watered plain for himself.

Genesis 13:10-11 KJV And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

3. Lot was willing to throw his virginal daughters to the sexual predators outside his door. He was unwilling to fight for what was right.

Genesis 19:8 KJV Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

4. Lot had no credibility with his family. Sodom was facing destruction, Lot pleaded with his Sons in law to leave before it was destroyed, and they thought he was joking.

Genesis 19:14 KJV And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

5. I’ve lived my life with the principle that I stay between my wife, and danger. I walk between my wife and traffic on the street. I stay between my wife and an aggressive dog. Lot’s place was between his wife and danger as they were running away from, in the destruction of Sodom, instead he was in front of her, closer to safety. When she looked behind her, she should have seen him, instead of being turned into a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:17 KJV And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

Genesis 19:26 KJV But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

6. Lot allowed himself to become so drunk twice that he committed an unspeakable acts of sexual depravity with his daughters. The fact that his daughters were willing participants in this, speaks further to their lack of moral foundation. The offspring of these unholy unions became bitterest enemies of the Hebrew people.

Genesis 19:30-38 KJV And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Out of many less than admirable characters of the Bible, some redeeming virtue can be found. I can see little in Lot's life that was positive, or had a positive historical effect.
