God, Who Should I Pray For?

Image
This morning, I had to drive down Middlebury Street in Elkhart, Indiana, where for years we did street ministry. At almost every house of the 10 blocks between Goshen Avenue, and Main Street, memories of people came flooding back. I was overcome with gratitude. I began praying and worshipping and thanking God for all the things He has done in my life. Something that has been on my mind recently, that I spend too much time asking Him for things. Jesus speaking: Matthew 6:8 KJV Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. There is nothing wrong with asking Him for things. . . nothing wrong in asking Him repeatedly for things: A parable by Jesus: Luke 18:1-7 KJV And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of ...

Right on Time God

God is so good. . . How many times have things like this occurred to Jackie and I. We live in the heart of Amish country.  The Amish use horse and buggies for transportation, horses for farm field work, etc. So we are surrounded by horses.  I awoke this morning, feeling like I hadn't slept last night.  I was exhausted, had a slight headache. . . just needed more sleep.  I let work know that I would be in late, and rested until I felt ready to face the day. Spent some time sipping coffee, petting the dogs, watching the various birds and a squirrel feed at the feeders before heading off to work As I drove west on U.S. 20 toward LaGrange, Indiana, I thought I saw a horse  up in the distance, maybe ¼ mile up the road.  Too far away to tell for sure, but as I drove I was thinking maybe it was a glimpse of a buggy just leaving the road, or someone riding a horse, neither of which is uncommon in these parts, in the heart of Amish country. So I kept my eyes ...

The power of prayer. . . God delivering my wife and I from a very difficult situation.

An Answered Prayer. . .

Yesterday between Sunday School and our Worship Service, Terry Wallin and I drove to pick up Blessing Bob, whom you remember Terry and I met  on Marion Street, doing street ministry last summer.  On the way to Bob's, thinking of our wonderful street ministry of last year, out of the blue I spoke a word of faith with confidence, "We will see Mellissa again and she will one day be back in our lives. . ." and then I said a prayer out loud for her.  Melissa, Terry and I were the three musketeers. . . we just had a grand time ministering on the streets of Elkhart, but unfortunately Melissa has been missing for quite some time now.  She is not presently involved in our ministry and neither is she worshiping with us. . . In the middle of the afternoon today, a little more than 24 hours from my prayers yesterday, I received a text message on my phone, "Hi Brother Dave.  How are you?"  It was from an unknown phone number, but my heart gladdened within me, "Melissa??...

A Three Legged Stool. . .

Image
It is annoying for me to go into a restaurant and to have a table that rocks and tips.  That just really bugs me no end.  Your water sloshes and spills.  Every time you lean against it as you chat everything comes toppling your way.  It is a chronic symptom of a table with four legs on an uneven floor.  It is next to impossible to get each of the legs the precisely needed length and if you do manage to do that, when the table is moved only a few inches to a new position the rocking begins again.   A three legged stool on the other hand will never tip.  It is geometrically impossible for that to happen.  It takes three points to define a plane.  Get a three legged milk stool and cut the legs to differing lengths all you want, place it on the most uneven floor imaginable and it will not wobble and rock.  Those three legs define a flat surface, and are inherently stable. I believe that our relationship with God is built upon communicat...

What a week. . .

I related to you, how I ran into a fellow Randy and his wife Joanne, that I went to school with while we were handing out fliers in the neighborhood last Tuesday night and how they were having a candlelight vigil on preventing child abuse at the civic plaza. I had planned on going down there after the revival service to offer support and possibly pray with the people for healing, etc. Well my sister called me Friday, my sister Sue who has been to both of Josh Herring's revival meetings this week, my sister Sue whom God is doing a great work in her life. . . She calls me and tells me that Jenny our cousin works in the cafeteria at Central High School and somehow was having a conversation with a lady that she worked with about the upcoming vigil for preventing child abuse. This lady was the organizer of that event. Her name was Joanne and her speaker fro CAPS, Child Abuse Prevention Services had canceled at the last minute. Somehow my name came up, the fellow she had just met d...
