John 3:14-16 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: (15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. By far, I'm sure this is the most often quoted passage of Scripture in the New Testament. People who know nothing about the Word of God can quote verses 15 and 16 by heart. They take comfort that their passive belief has given them salvation, but what does it mean to believe? Is belief only to recognize Jesus as the son of God? If so, then the devils believe. What would you do if you had an endless amount of money? I am not talking about the pitiful little pile ($40,000,000,000) that Bill Gates was reported by Forbes Magazine to have accrued as the richest man in the world in 2009. I am asking you to consider, "what if your checking account balance was endless?" Put as many zeroes as you like in the amount. . .There would be none less money in your account. What limits would there be to your giving? Cancer or AIDs research???. . . 1 trillion dollars each. Money to rebuild Haiti??? Drop a trillion there also. What possible difference would it make? Why would you even consider holding back? Does the church need a new building?. . . a mere billion would probably build a very nice one. There are two ways of making this statement. You can make this statement in faith, with confidence in the promise of God or you can say this as an accusation. From the depths of your despair, you can blame God for being overwhelmed by your situation. Before you point an accusing finger at God for breaking a promise, you must first be sure that you fully understand that promise. Let us read what the verse says. I came to God after being an atheist for the first 45 years of my life. It's funny to think back, but it really was far more than a disbelief in God. I actually actively hated Him. . . never really stopping to consider how logical it was to hate that which was non-existent. I regularly cursed television preachers when ever I ran across them while channel surfing on TV. I felt myself oh so morally superior to every Christian. I felt myself able to do good deeds altruistically, not needing the promise of heaven as the simpleton Christians did. How very relieved I was to learn after opening my heart to God and being baptized in Jesus name for the remission of my sins.
