Lord My Redeemer Isaiah 49:26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. (KJV) I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh; they will be drunk on their own blood, as with wine. Then all mankind will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior, your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob." (NIV) Isaiah 60:16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. (KJV) You will drink the milk of nations and be nursed at royal breasts. Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your Savior, your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. (NIV) This has not been an easy name for me to grasp the idea of. We do not use the concept or the word redeemer muc...

Lord Our Defense Psalms 89:18 For the LORD is our defense; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. Again this name, 'the Lord our defense' has to do with our relationship with God, our relationship of His Lordship and our being a subject of His. It is a formal relationship, one with obligations on both sides. Most everyone knows that Moses came down from Mount Sinai with two tablets in his hands. I just assumed and I've seen it illustrated that tablet 1 had Commandments 1-5 on it and on tablet 2, Commandments 6-10 were written by God's hand. I've recently read an intriguing alternative to that possibility. This theory has it that both tablets had all the commandments written on them, representing two copies of the contract that these commandments represented between God and the Hebrew people. If you go to a lawyer and enter into a contract (a covenant) with someone, you and they both will come away with a copy of the agreement. Each party to the agreement will...

Mighty in Battle Ps 24:8 Verse 8 is where our compound name is found, but I like this Psalm so well I thought that I would include the entire passage: Of David. A psalm. 1 The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2 for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. 3 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Selah 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates;...

Lord Most High Psalms 7:17 I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high. Psalms 47:2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. Psalms 97:9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. A long time ago, I had a couple of cats. They spent a lot of time outside and I kept a food dish on the porch for them. At certain times of the year, in the warm humid evenings, these large slugs would come out and eat the cat food from the bowl. These were big slugs. I don't know, maybe the cat food made them grow extra large. If I remember right, they were about two inches long. This was years and years ago, maybe twenty-five year ago. I don't know why I first thought of it, but now whenever I begin to feel like I'm something, I think of those slugs. I remember looking down at them. I am so much more capable than they. I can think such great thoug...

Lord my God Psalms 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (KJV) 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (NIV) Exodus 34:4-10 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. 5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the ...

Lord the Sword Deut. 33:29 Deuteronomy 33:29Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places. (KJV) 29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD He is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will trample down their high places." (NIV) That is the specific verse where this name is found. I really like the entire passage in the NIV: 26 "There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!' 28 So Israel will live in safety alone; Jacob's spring is secure ...

Lord my Strength Psalm 27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (KJV) The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? (NIV) Here's the Strong's Hebrew entry for the word: From H5810; a fortified place; figuratively a defence: - force, fort (-ress), rock, strength (-en), (X most) strong (hold). This word surely could be translated strength as the KJV has it, but also stronghold as the NIV chose is also a good fit. The strength of my life, the stronghold of my life, that describes what I desire, that is what I need God to be. . . What is a stronghold? It is a fortress, a strong place that you can put your confidence in to be safe and secure. Here are two Biblical instances of people using a stronghold: Judges 9:45-52 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the...
