Compound names of God

Compound names of God. This list is by no means exhaustive.  My goal was to update this list today, which I first made close to 20 years ago, but it has become apparent that that will not be a not a quick task.  The word "Jehovah" appears 6521 times in some 5524 Old Testament verses.   God fills many needs. . . takes many roles in His interactions with us.  These compound names are worthy of deeper study and meditation on. 1. Jehovah - The Lord - Exodus 6:2-3 2. Jehovah-Adon Kal Ha'arets- Lord of Earth - Josh 3:11, Josh 3:13, Zech 6:5 3. Jehovah-Aman - The faithful God - Deu 7-9 4. Jehovah-Bara - Lord Creator - Isaiah 40:28 5. Jehovah-Chatsahi - Lord my Strength - Psalm 27:1, Neh 8:10 6. Jehovah-Chereb - Lord the Sword - Deut. 33:29 7. Jehovah-Eli - Lord my God - Exo 34:6, Deu 4:24, Deu 6:15, Deu 7:9, Deu 7:21, Psalm 18:2 8. Jehovah-Eli-'ĕlôhı̂ym - Lord God of gods Jos 22:22 9. Jehovah-elohim - Lord God Gen 2:4 229 times 10. Lord Is With You - Judges 6:12 ( H5973  ) Judges 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him,  The LORD is with thee , thou mighty man of valor . The Hebrew word used here, "eem" is a common preposition used over 900 times, translated into English as "with", but the common never remains that way when used in conjunction with the Lord.  In this passage the angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and announces to him that he will be used to save his people: Judges 6:14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? Gideon does not believe.  Gideon does not understand that the Lord is with him.  God's plan is very thorough.  There are no surprises to God.  Gideon claims weakness: Judges 6:15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. But th...

Lord my Strength - (H5797 ) Here are two verses where 'Lord my strength' appears: Exodus 15:2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. Psalms 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. In studying these verses, I was struck by the parallels between them. The first verse is from the song of Moses. In Exodus 14, the Lord rescued the Hebrew people by parting the sea and allowing them to escape the army of Pharaoh. The second verse is a Psalm written by David. We're not sure of the circumstances, but we know that David is celebrating God's hearing his prayer. from verse 6: Psalms 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. So the occasions of the writing of these verses, are times of crying out to God in ...

Lord my Strength Psalm 19:14 ( H6697 ) rock 64, strength 5, sharp 2, God 2, beauty 1, edge 1, stones 1, mighty One 1, strong 1 Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength , and my redeemer. I have been struggling, seeking for the meaning of this compound name for months. It has been on my mind very very frequently. During prayer last night I felt release to write on this name. . . Notice what this verse does not say. It does not say that the Lord is the source of my strength. It says that, the Lord is my strength. Jehovah-Tsori, my strength does not contain Him. All that I have that is strong is Him. All other strength is an illusion. The primary translation for this word is 'rock'. O LORD, my rock , and my redeemer. . . A rock gives stability. There is no need for stability until a storm comes. Remember Jesus' parable: Matthew 7:24-27 Therefore whosoever heareth these s...

Righteousness Jeremiah 23:6 ( H6664 ) righteousness 77, just 11, justice 10, righteous 8, righteously 3, right 3, righteous cause 1, unrighteousness 1, misc 2 Jeremiah 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Our righteousness comes from God. We have no righteousness of, nor on our own. Following is the entire 64th chapter of Isaiah. Originally I was only looking for verse 6, which I have highlighted, but take a moment or wait until you have a few moments and then read this passage. Isaiah 64:1-12 Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence, (2) As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence! (3) When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mo...

Jehovah-Shammah - The Lord is There Strong's word H8033 - 'Present'  This word is used some 823 times in 724 verses.  Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there .  Ezekiel 43:1-7 Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: (2) And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. (3) And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face. (4) And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. (5) So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. (6) And I he...

Peace Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace . Strong's word H7965 Translated as: peace 175, well 14, peaceably 9, welfare 5, salute + 07592 4, prosperity 4, did 3, safe 3, health 2, peaceable 2, misc 15 Psalms 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace , and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. The God of peace brings to us the peace of God. . . Even today this word 'shalom' is a common greeting between the Hebrew people. As a young man growing up in the sixties, I was a youthful supporter of the peace movement of the Vietnam war where many of us adopted the peace sign and used shalom as a greeting between us. Indeed shalom can mean freedom from war, but more significantly it also has a meaning of inner peace and well being. In reading accounts of the unspeakabl...

Lord my Rock Psalm 18:2 ( H5553 ) Psalms 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. This word is translated as in the KJV: rock 57, strong hold 1, stones 1, stony 1 Numbers 20:7-12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, 8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. 9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, ...

Lord of Hosts I Sam 1:3 (H6635 ) 1 Samuel 1:3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. Here are the ways that this word is translated: host 393, war 41, army 29, battle 5, service 5, appointed time 3, warfare 2, soldiers 1, company 1, misc 5 Here are some other verses that use this name: Joshua 5:13-15 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the ...

The Lord my Shepherd Psalm 23 (H7462 ) Psalm 23 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. My Shepherd. . . He provides for me. . . He sets aside lush abundant places and times of rest for me. . . He finds places of peace and stillness where my thirst can be quenched. . . He heals me from the wounds and battles of life. . . He has adopted me as His own and has given me a...

Lord who Smites Ezekiel 7:9 (H5221 ) Ezekiel 7:1-9 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, (2) Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land. (3) Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. (4) And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. (5) Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. (6) An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. (7) The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. (8) Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon th...
